Declutter & Reset: How to Organize Kids’ Toys and Rooms After the Holidays?

Holidays are a good time to celebrate and live with a new spirit. However, these are also the times when our homes are scattered with kids’ toys and gifts. If you feel your kid’s toy basket is overflowing and their play area is getting crowded, it might be time to declutter and reset their toys and room. Let us look at some practical strategies for organizing kids’ toys and rooms after the holidays.

Bring all the Toys Back to One Spot

Before you start sorting the toys, round them up from everywhere and place them in one spot. This makes it easier for you while you go through them. Do not worry about it; if it is getting a bigger pile, this will ensure that the toys are not forgotten while sorting out.

Organize Toys into Distinct Categories

Sort all toys based on how your kid uses them and what they are meant for. This helps you understand how many toys fall into each category and if the amount feels overwhelming.

Some examples of categories could be:

  • Games (Doctor Playset, code crunchers, etc.)
  • Sensory Play Toys (Rainbow pebbles, playdough, holographic slime, etc.)
  • Building and Magnetic Toys (Building block toy set, magnetic board games, etc.)
  • Educational Toys (flash cards, puzzles, etc.)
  • Puzzles (Magnetic puzzles, Blocks, geometric shape puzzles, etc.)
  • Wooden Toys (Wooden puzzles, wooden building blocks, wooden tea set, etc.)
  • Stuffed Toys (Stuffed animals, dolls, etc.)
  • Electronic Toys (Vehicles, Dancing dolls, etc.)

Tackle Clutter by Sorting Through Each Toy Category

Now, half the work is done. Since the toys are sorted, go through each category and decide which ones to discard and which to keep. While doing this, let your kid be involved with you; they would really enjoy the process. Meanwhile, also remind them how to keep the toys organized going forward.

Once you have decided which toys your kid wants to keep and which to discard, consider how to dispose of them properly. You can donate some of them, recycle, or throw them away.

Tidy Up the Toys and Place Them in the Right Storage

So, now that the decluttering is done. It’s time to reorganize the remaining toys that your kiddo wants to keep with them. Keep those toys sorted by category and place them in their designated spot, such as a toy basket, toy bin, or storage box.

What about the Room? How to Organize the Room after Holidays?

Now that toys are being organized, what about the room? Your kid’s room must be mess-free and well-organized. This can be done by placing the toy bins/storage baskets in one place, creating a play area for them, a corner for art and craft, and a reading corner. With this, keeping toys arranged and rooms tidy throughout the year becomes easier.

Tips to Keep Toys and Rooms Organized?

  • Storing toys and organizing the room can be possible with the following tips.
  • Donate a toy every time you purchase a new one.
  • Limit yourself to only one or a maximum of two toys for the holidays.
  • Maintain different corners for your child’s play, reading, crafting, etc.
  • Have different toy organizers for different types of toys and place each one of them at its desired spot.

“Decluttering is not just about removing the unwanted things; it is more about making room for things that matter.” So, declutter and reset; begin organizing your kid’s toys and room, and make room for your little one’s laughter and fun!
